Introducing, Joey Iacovino. Sponsored fighter of The Simmons Law Group, this BJJ fighter is known for making his opponents submit and always tries to avoid leaving it to the judges!! Joey is also a community leader and uses his fight purses and athletic talents towards raising funds for Cancer Research. When it comes to his Jiu Jitsu, his passion comes from the smiles of those he helps. Transforming and changing the lives of those who need it are what motivates him to keep on fighting every day. He fights against cancer for those who are impacted personally (many of which are his same age!)
The organization he has raised money towards is called Tap Cancer Out. It not only provides funds for cancer research, but it also donates to families in need who have a child in the midst of battle. Not only did he raise a significant amount towards research efforts this year, on October 5, 2019, Joey won Gold for two years in a row when he fought in the Tap Cancer Out BJJ tournament. He is a champion on the mats and for his Community. Let’s all root for him, follow his page on Instagram and Facebook, and donate to his cause to Tap Cancer Out!!!
What Does Joey Have To Say?
“I found Jiu-Jitsu through American Top Team in the beginning of 2013. Ever since I have stuck with this for various reasons, it can teach you many character traits such as modesty, integrity, and perseverance. I used to be the smallest and weakest in the class, but I kept working hard and coming back – I am now at the top. The mentality of Jiu-Jitsu is never to give up, which relates to the subject I want to talk about – cancer.
In 2018, I came across the competition Tap Cancer Out which was raising money to fight childhood cancer. Thanks to many contributions, I was able to raise over $1,500, and my entire team raised over $6,000. The entirety of Orlando was able to raise $40,000. This made me realize that I am able to practice Jiu-Jitsu while helping others in need.
My classmate, Remy Vyce has battled with cancer before and beat it. Sadly, earlier that year, she was diagnosed with Leukemia. Luckily, she is doing well right now and overcoming it. My grandma was also diagnosed with Lung cancer a few years ago, and it hurts me to see her in the state that she is in. This is why contributing to this cause is so important to me. It is my dream to see everyone live long and healthy lives without the fear of terrible diseases such as cancer. Jiu-Jitsu has taught me to persevere, and I look up to the people who have to endure this terrible disease. Every bit of support counts, even a dollar may save someone’s life.”
